Born in Buenos Aires, Luis Barragán (1914-2009) studied art at the Escuela Nacional de Arte (Buenos Aires) and at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes Ernesto de la Cárcova. He was a founding member of Grupo Orión, and also of Veinte Pintores y Escultores. In 1939 Barragán had his first formal exhibition – showing with Grupo Orión at the Argentine Society of Fine Art. At the beginning of his career, Barragán produced figurative, surrealist works; however, his content gradually shifted toward geometric abstraction. In 1971 the National Academy of Fine Arts awarded Barragán the Augusto Palanza Prize, and in 1977 he was incorporated as a distinguished academic. Barragán also served as President of the Argentine Society of Fine Artists.
